Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says “the Government of Dominica has approved an initial donation to Venezuela of USD Five Hundred Thousand Dollars (USD500,000.00) to Venezuela in the wake of the double earthquake strike.
It’s been a week since Venezuela’s worst earthquake disaster in over a century. Thousands of people are feared dead, with the official death toll continuing to rise as hope fades of finding survivors in the rubble.
The South American country now faces a humanitarian catastrophe — on top of the deep crises it was already dealing with before the quakes.
“I wish once again to express the sympathy and solidarity of the Government and people of Dominica with the Government and people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that resulted in loss of life, injuries and widespread destruction,” Prime Minister Skerrit said during a press conference.
“Venezuela has always been a valued friend and neighbour, and our thoughts and prayers remain with all those who have been affected. These tragic events remind us of the importance of solidarity and cooperation in times of crisis. The Government of Dominica has approved an initial donation to Venezuela of USD Five Hundred Thousand Dollars (USD500,000.00).
Nearly 50,000 people remain unaccounted for in the wake of Venezuela’s powerful earthquakes as the death toll continues to climb, officials said. At least 2,295 people have died, and another 11,267 were injured from the pair of earthquakes that struck on June 24, knocking down buildings and sending residents racing into the street.
