Catholic Priest Fr. Karam describes the late Kertist Augustus as a man always ready and prepared to defend the rights of workers

Hundreds from all walks of life gathered at the Roseau Cathedral Chapel to say a final farewell to trade unionists and a former member of the Dominica House of Assembly Kertist Augustus.

Augustus died on July 9, 2021, after a very brief illness.

Dean of the Roseau Cathedral Fr. Nigel Karam described the late Kertist Augustus as a “man who was not afraid to bring his faith in the public square.”

“He defended the church from those who wanted to use Sunday as a normal working day against the wishes of the Lord who said he worked for six days and on the seventh he rested,” Fr. Karam stated.

Augustus he said was “always smartly dressed” and always ready and willing to defend the rights of workers with “just and candor.”

“He was a good negotiator, always ready willing, and prepared to defend the rights of workers, he was a walking encyclopedia who knew the labour laws of the country,” the Catholic Priest stated.

Among those attending the official funeral were President of Dominica Charles Savarin and his wife, members of Cabinet, opposition leader Lennox Linton, members of the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), and a cross-section of the Dominica Society.

His body was laid to rest at the Roseau Roman Catholic Cemetery.
