Customs slap Jade Stewart with 65 charges

The Customs Division in Dominica has leveled 65 charges against Jade Stewart of Grand Bay who is on remand at the Dominica Prison on over 15 gun-related and ammunitions charges dating back to February 3, 2022, where he was arrested by Customs and the police while he attempted to clear a barrel at the Woodbridge Bay Port in Fond Cole with 15 firearms along with several rounds of ammunition.

He pleaded not guilty to the summary charges and was denied bail by the Magistrate’s Court in Roseau when he appeared on February 10, 2022.

Stewart on February 17, 2022, appeared before Magistrate Michael Laduat where the Customs charges which includes importation or cause to import firearms and ammunition and attempt to evade duty under the Customs Act.

A number of the charges were laid summarily and Stewart pleaded “not guilty” to them while those which were laid “indictable” and he was not required to plead.

Magistrate Laduat implored on the prosecution to “try to let the wheels of justice spin quickly” so that Stewart can get a speedy trial since the matters are all of “a serious nature”.

The matters were adjourned to May 27, 2022. Joshua Francis from the Chambers of Joshua Francis held papers for Zena Moore Dyer lawyer for Stewart who is presently sick and unable to attend court.
