Election petition adjourned to July 7

After all the political ranting about not wanting the resident judges to hear the election petition filed by the United Workers Party (UWP) challenging the results of the December 6, 2019, general elections in ten constituencies the parties met in court on June 18, 2020.

The UWP is seeking to have the court overturn the results in St. Joseph, Mahaut, Morne Jaune, La Plaine, Castle Bruce, Salybia, Roseau Valley, Roseau Central, Roseau South, and Wesley constituencies.

The court met via Zoom before St. Kitts based high court judge Professor Eddy Ventose who after listening to all the parties gave directions to have the matter proceed.

Speaking to Nature Isle News (NIN), one lawyer who was part of the proceedings disclosed that DBS radio who is a party to the matter is now asking the court for permission to file documents to “strike out” the petitioners claim.

“We found that very interesting since they had enough time like the lawyer for the others did…in the end, the judge decided to have them file the documents to strike out and then gave us a date to respond,” the lawyer stated.

The matter was adjourned to July 7, 2020, when the court is expected to hear arguments from the respondents who are asking that the petitioner’s claims be “struck out.”
