Election petition matter set for July 21

A new high court judge has been assigned to hear the election petition matter filed by the opposition United Worker Party (UWP) stemming from the 2019 December general elections in Dominica.

Guyanese born Raulston Glasgow resident civil judge in Grenada is the judge hearing the matter after resident judge Bernie Stephenson recused herself and later St. Kitts based resident judge Eddy Ventose also did the same. But not before attorney general, Levi Peter had written to the Chief Justice Dame Janice Pereira asking that justice Wynante Adrien-Roberts a resident Dominican judge not be assigned the matter since she had worked in the office of AG before becoming a judge.

Lawyers for the respondents led by Anthony Astaphan SC were seeking the court to strike out the matter.

The judge then asked the petitioners and the respondents to file a summary of their case to the court with the relevant supporting documents.

He also gave them a 7-10 days window to file the matters and list the matter down for hearing on July 21, 2020.

The UWP is seeking to have the court overturn the results in St. Joseph, Mahaut, Morne Jaune, La Plaine, Castle Bruce, Salybia, and Roseau Valley, Roseau Central, Roseau South, and Wesley constituencies.

The UWP is asking the court to find that there were massive irregularities on election day and it is requesting that the results in these constituencies be overturned.

The Dominica Labour Party (DLP) is asking the court to strike out the petitions since according to them “they have no merit.”
