Mehul Choski Soap Opera case continues in Dominica

As the soap opera continues to unfold in the Mehul Choski matter reports have surfaced that members of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in India, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Ministry of External Affairs are now in Dominica.

A private jet from Qatar with an Indian connection landed in Dominica and is parked at the Douglas-Charles.

The fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, is wanted in the PNB loan fraud case.

On Saturday, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne also confirmed that a private jet had landed in Dominica with certain documents related to Choksi who was involved in a multi-million dollar bank scam in India.

Browne was responding to a question during his radio programme on a question about a private jet arriving in Dominica from Qatar and said, “Yes I can confirm that a jet is there. My understanding is that the Indian government has sent some documentation from the courts to confirm that Choksi is a fugitive.

“My understanding is that it is for the court hearing scheduled on Wednesday (June 2) as the Dominica court has put a stay on his deportation. So the Indian government seems to be going all out to ensure that he is repatriated to India and face charges there.”

Choksi, who is wanted in India by the CBI and the ED in Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case had gone missing from Antigua on May 23, sparking a massive manhunt.

He surfaced in Dominica and his lawyers claim that he was “kidnapped”, since then; he has been locked up in police cells.

The police in Dominica, the Minister of National Security Rayburn Blackmoore has remained silent on the current saga only releasing a brief statement stating that due process will be followed and Choski will be repatriated back to Antigua where he has been residing since January 4, 2018.

The High Court is Dominica has restrained his repatriation till June 2 and also issued a “gag Order” on lawyers in Dominica forbidding them from speaking to the press on the matter.
