Skerrit to meet with Haitian leaders in Dominica

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says that he intends to meet with the leaders of the Haitian community in Dominica to speak to them and address the situation of Haitians coming into the country via illegal means.

Over the past week, the police have arrested over 30 Haitian nationals found to be in Dominica illegally. The police Chief Daniel Carbon and National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore have made it clear that those found entering illegally and or without proper documentation will be sent back to their country.

“I intend to meet sometime this week with the respectable Haitian nationals in Dominica so they can do what they have to do to speak to the Haitians so we have to take this matter under full control. We need to stop it and we need the entire country to play our part because if we remain silent we could very well be subjected to COVID-19 cases in our community,” Skerrit said.

“I have also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to write to the French authorities so that they too can do more to control the French waters and assist us in that regard so that people can’t lose lives in the channel.”

According to him, while they are not targeting any groups or individuals the illegal practice must stop.

“We are not targeting any individual we are saying that this practice must stop and we don’t want the virus coming into the country through illegal means,” he said.
