APP will contest the next general elections in Dominica with or without electoral reform

The acting political leader of the Alternative People’s Party (APP) Tahira Blanchard has disclosed that her party will take part in the next general elections whether there is electoral reform in Dominica or not.

There has been much talk and debate about “electoral reform” in Dominica with the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) stating that they would not have taken part in the 2019 general elections in the absence of “Electoral reform and the cleansing of the voter’s list.”

However, the UWP had a change of heart and did take part in the elections losing 18-3 to the Dominica Labour Party (DLP). They then took the matter to court but it was dismissed in the high court and the Court of Appeal.

Speaking to Matt Peltier host of the popular show on Q95 “The Hott Heat” Blanchard revealed that with or without “electoral reform” the APP will contest the next general elections in Dominica.

“The Alternative People’s Party will contest the next general elections with or without reform,” she told Peltier.

When challenged by the host stating that she was “blowing hot and cold” on the issue she rebuffed that suggestion explaining that while they support the need for electoral reform, they will ensure that as a political party, they will do “what it takes to win the next general elections in Dominica with or without reform.”

“As a political party, we will do what it takes to win the next general elections,” she stated. She said that the APP will work with opposition forces in regard to the call for electoral reform.

The Government has appointed retired Chief Justice of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) Sir Dennis Byron who will serve as the sole commissioner to advance efforts towards electoral reform in Dominica.
