Tribute to Fallen Trade Union Stalwart Alvin Serrant

I lend my voice in paying tribute to a fallen hero and trade union stalwart; Brother Alvin Serrant, of the Waterfront & Allied Workers Union (WAWU). As we mourn his passing, we must pay tribute to his remarkable contributions and dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the rights and welfare of workers; and in so doing to note the indelible mark that he has left on the labor movement in Dominica.

Throughout his years of service, Brother Serrant demonstrated exceptional leadership, advocating tirelessly for the rights of the members of the Waterfront & Allied Workers Union. His unwavering determination, coupled with his deep understanding of the challenges faced by workers, and in particular, the stevedore and dock workers on the island, made him a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless individuals.

Brother Serrant’s steadfast commitment to social justice and his relentless pursuit of fair working conditions have brought about significant positive changes within the Dominica labor landscape. His efforts have not only improved the lives of countless workers but also fostered a sense of solidarity and unity within the labor movement.

Beyond his advocacy for workers’ rights, Brother Serrant was known for his ability to build bridges and forge alliances, both within and outside the labor movement. I recalled distinctly those abilities during my tenure and interaction with him as General Secretary of the Dominica Civil Service Association. He recognized the importance of collaboration and believed in the power of collective action. His charismatic personality and ability to bring diverse groups together played a pivotal role in shaping a more inclusive and equitable labor movement in Dominica.

As we remember Brother Alvin Serrant today, let us not only mourn the loss of a great union leader but also celebrate his remarkable achievements. His legacy should serve as a reminder that the fight for workers’ rights and social justice is an ongoing struggle, one that requires dedication, unity, and unwavering determination.

Let us honor our brother’s memory by continuing his work, championing the rights of workers, and striving to create a more just and equitable society for all. May his spirit and legacy inspire future generations of trade unionists to carry the torch forward, working tirelessly to create a world where every worker is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

Rest in power, Brother Serrant. Your contributions will never be forgotten, and your impact will continue to resonate within the labor movement in Dominica and the region.

In Solidarity
